New Nvidia RTX5090

Our Visual PC is now almost four years old. It was definitely well suited for three full HD and P3D. But the new generation with several 4K projectors and the MSFS2020/2024 require more up-to-date computing power. Now that Nvidia's RTX5090 is officially available, we have decided to replace our simulator's main computer.

The 50 series graphics cards are known for their tendency to burn out their power supply. That's why we leave the construction to professionals. We have opted for a 19" device. In principle, it doesn't matter whether it's a desktop or rackmount computer. A server cabinet looks cooler and we already have one. Apart from that, we can hide the cable clutter better.

Speaking of tangled cables. We've tried out a lot over the last few years. So it's time to tidy up the server cabinet. In the end, we used almost 50 metres less cable, saved 4 power supply units and some small devices.

(If you want to know more: we used to connect the sound outputs of the computers via small mixers. Today we do this - if necessary at all - via VBAN/Voicemeeter - another tutorial maybe...).

However, we have also found devices in the server cabinet whose purpose we could no longer understand.... :-)

After a little work, the cabinet is neatly reassembled. We have added a red LED strip. Not because it was functionally necessary, but because it looks nice. :-)

Changing the hardware is the same as a new installation. However, this runs relatively smoothly, whereby we have taken over existing configuration files from the old computer. And then comes the big moment....

We are thrilled! The picture is much more detailed and smoother. After a little (minor) tuning, we achieve an average of 60 fps and more. Even with the complex Duesseldorf Airport add-on it's still 45 fps on the taxiway. Now we can also feel slight gusts of wind and flying is much more precise.

We would like to take this opportunity to advertise backups once again. In principle, computers can also break down and it makes sense to back up the configuration files. However, these are widely distributed on the computer. You can find a list of the storage locations in our tutorial section.
